BioRobotics Lab demonstrates research technologies at the IEEE Seattle 110th Anniversary Celebration

SeattleIEEE110_JAHThis last Sunday evening, members of the UW BRL attended the IEEE Seattle Section’s 110th Anniversary Celebration event at the Seattle Pacific Center. Senator Maria Cantwell joined regional IEEE members to celebrate this impressive anniversary. Graduate student researchers Jeffrey Herron and Kevin Huang brought demos to the event to showcase ongoing research from the UW BioRobotics Lab.

Jeffrey Herron demonstrated his work on prototype ambulatory closed-loop deep-brain stimulation systems. The system consists of a mobile application that uses wearable sensing to trigger and modify neural stimulation parameters in an implantable deep brain stimulator. The application was entered into and won the student mobile app competition. A video of the mobile system demonstrated can be seen here-

Kevin Huang brought a Kuka robot to the event in order to demonstrate new virtual fixture haptic feedback technologies. Using a haptic endpoint, users could manipulate a valve using the robotic arm. Haptic feedback allowed users to feel force feedback from the robot and virtual fixtures were used to guide the movement allowing easy use of the robot. A video of these technologies being demonstrated can be seen here-
