Telesurgery Via Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)
High Altitude Platforms Mobile Robotic Telesurgery (HAPsMRT)

Abstract

The primary objective of this project was to develop and validate a High Altitude Platforms (HAPs) Mobile Robotic Telesurgery (MRT) system that allows a remote surgeon to effectively operate on an injured soldier regardless of the soldier’s location or environment. These experiments validated mobile robotic telesurgery through use of an unmanned aerial vehicle-based (UAV) communication system and a prototype next generation surgical robot in the extreme environment.

The experiment took place on June 5-9 2006 in Simi Valley California. The University of Washington surgical robot serving as the MRT was deployed in a selected site of Simi Valley CA. Drs. Broderick and Huffman (University of Cincinnati ) teleoperated the surgical robot on inanimate objects simulating internal organs - a task commonly used in training surgeons. The surgeon console was separated about 100 m apart form the surgical robot. The local wireless communication (video and manipulation commands) was transmitted through PUMA (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle - UAV) by AeroVironment serving as the HAPs platform. Hardware compression / decompression of the video signals of the surgical site was provided by hai560 - Haivision systems Inc.
